Trees

The first Journey started in March 2009.

Why should one record a tree? Why should one listen to an abstract noise which requires acceleration and amplification so it would make sense to the human ear?

For more than nine years, I have collected data based on sound recordings gathered thoroughly and consistently from the inside of a living tree. The trees are located at different radii in the Black Forest in South Germany.

Sensitive recording systems were attached to each of the 138 trees, recording the delicate life movements taking place continuously inside.

I selected this location intuitively, due to my interest in and attraction to past events and unresolved matters which left a mark and mute signs. Events that will not unravel over time.

Located near the cabin of the philosopher Martin  Heidegger, the trees served as “witnesses” of the meeting between Martin Heidegger and Paul Celan in 1969.

Thus, I have been recording trees that hold data in their bodies -  language data from the conversation that was held between Heidegger and Celan.
