Trains

Started in January 2004, Bremen train station, Germany, platform no. 3.

Since 2004 I have recorded several train stations in Germany and around Europe. I was keen to explore how the railroad tracks shiver and echo, long before the train arrives at the platform.

I used magnets to attach sensitive microphones to the side of the railway,  allowing me to listen to the sound and echo of the movement, preceding the arrival of the train itself.

Why explore something we feel but cannot see? How does the sound which I cannot hear be active long before I make visual contact with the cause of movement and sound?

I have a deep interest in the subconscious and information related to perception and areas of a threshold.

This has been an attempt to record a threshold that is simultaneously on the verge of possible disappearance or a sudden appearance.
