The Magnetic Hearts series is a comprehensive array of drawings that deals with a unique sculptural model composed of dried tree trunks and branches taken from the Duisburg swamp area in northwestern Germany.
The organic parts from the swamp vegetation have been dried in the studio and the process of emptying them due to the drying action has allowed the artist to insert magnets into the hollow branches and trunks. Due to the use of magnets a unique reaction was created between them, which composed a field of action and active movement on top of the table on which they were laid. As a result, the still life that was composed from the parts of the vegetation has become a subject for drawing.
For over a year Sasportas has made a series of drawings in her studio in Berlin that followed the constant movement that occurred between the different parts of the still life composition on the table.
The result was a rich series of drawings capturing a variety of situations: on one hand, drawings in which the original elements of the swamp are still identifiable; on the other hand, drawings that documented the disassembly and collapsing motion of the model, caused by the movement of the magnets, which sometimes created an unbalanced pull on one side, shifting the different organic components of the assembly.
The Magnetic Hearts drawings are characterized by a gradually changing state of matter and a drawing space that becomes abstract as a result of the constant movement. The series documents the movement of the heart using parts of vegetation that have been loaded with another alternate heart and the act of drawing traces its resonance - its attraction, love, disintegration and collapse at times.
