The Coded Papers series explores a vertical dialogue between an illuminated upper layer and a darkened lower layer. Within the drawings, Sasportas weaves in lines from a seismograph, derived from sound recordings she made in various locations around the world, particularly in areas of unresolved or unspoken conflict. The Coded Papers resemble a body of encrypted knowledge, where an address and hidden language operate simultaneously alongside the visible, familiar form.

Can a rift exist in an open and hostile space? How can an open space become rifted? What is the nature of active anxiety within a fragmented space? The concept of a rift in the sky has been central to Sasportas‘ practice for years, and in the Coded Papers series, she delve into the idea of creating layered maps, coded marks, and imprints that represent unresolved, intangible life events. These events freeze in time, distorting the space—spaces that cannot be represented or fully articulated through language, existing beyond its boundaries.

This series explores the way intense, defining moments leave their marks on an individual’s psyche, shaping a complex, layered mental space. The Coded Papers series examines how these experiences fracture and rift the inner landscape, imprinting themselves on the fabric of time and memory.

Through the works, different coded layers are drawn on top of one another, creating a layered mapping of fragmented and distorted spaces. Between these drawn lines and layers lies an intentional contradiction, opposing the nature of the marks and codes that have been embedded within them.
