How Did It Ever Come So Far
How Did it Ever Come So Far was Sasportas’ first site-specific installation exhibited in Berlin. A process of drawing and architectural intervention marked and defined the installation's territory, while a sound recording was interwoven to create an immersive, total environment - where the foreign viewer encountered fragments of a story, both present and absent in time.
The installation consisted of a significant sound work, recorded in various regions across Germany, alongside a rich and layered drawing practice that engaged directly with the gallery’s full architectural plan.
A life story - its chapters and fragments - was translated into a complete, wordless narrative through lines of sound and the nature of the absent drawn line. Mountain, swamp, hole, shadow, and an abandoned site were carefully rendered like ghost drawings - where all visual content had vanished, leaving only outlines: lines frozen in time. Drawings of locations, sound markers, and diagrams collaborated to map an ungraspable human event.
An event beyond language was translated into sculpture, sound, and drawing - fragmented elements that collectively attempted to build a continuous logic through time. Missing and mute story fragments were pieced together into a cohesive installation striving to make sense of the incomprehensible.
Missing pages, absent places, and recorded sounds tracing the documented sites formed the basis of the viewer’s total experience within the gallery space.
A life narrative. Gaps. A linear time that makes no sense. A time outside of time that intruded into time itself. Pages vanished from a book became heavy drawing sheets - attempting to wrap themselves around the viewer.
